Chapter 6: A Father’s Awakening

That evening, Gabriel made a conscious, deliberate choice that would change the trajectory of his life forever.

For years, Gabriel had believed that being a good provider meant building an empire of steel and capital. He had worked eighty-hour weeks, crossed oceans for multi-billion-dollar acquisitions, and surrounded his children with the finest security details and private tutors money could buy.

Yet, standing in the cozy kitchen of the mountain lodge, watching Mrs. Danvers teach Isabella how to roll cookie dough while Elena set the wooden table, Gabriel realized the devastating truth: wealth could never replace a father's presence. Edmund had found a crack in the Thorne Estate because Gabriel had left a void.

Gabriel took off his suit jacket, rolled up his linen shirt sleeves, and stepped up to the kitchen island.

"Can I help with the chocolate chips, Bella?" Gabriel asked with a gentle grin.

Isabella gasped with delight, clapping her flour-covered hands together. "Daddy's cooking!"

For the next two hours, the kitchen was filled with the sweet aroma of baking vanilla, ringing laughter, and spilled flour. Gabriel didn't check his phone once. He sat on the floor with his daughters, eating warm cookies, listening to Isabella tell imaginative stories about mountain bears, and helping Elena solve a complex mathematics puzzle.

When bedtime arrived, Gabriel carried Isabella to bed, with Elena climbing in beside her under the soft down comforter.

There was no fear in the room. When the grandfather clock in the hallway chimed nine times, Isabella didn't flinch. She simply clutched her wooden songbird whistle, looked up at Gabriel, and smiled sleepily.

"Sing the song, Daddy," Isabella whispered.

Gabriel sat on the edge of the bed and sang an old, gentle lullaby his own mother had sung to him decades ago. As his daughters drifted into deep, peaceful slumber, Gabriel made a silent vow to God: he would never again let the corporate world steal the precious hours of his children's youth.
