Chapter 2: The Man with the Silver Key

Gabriel carried Elena and Isabella into his personal fortress—the secure penthouse suite situated atop the west wing of the estate, accessible only through biometric locks.

After tucking the girls into his oversized bed under the watchful care of Mrs. Danvers, a loyal housekeeper who had served the Thorne family for three decades, Gabriel walked into his private study.

Standing at attention near the window was Thomas Briggs, Gabriel’s chief of private intelligence and a former federal investigator.

Gabriel placed the black smartphone and a tarnished silver skeleton key onto the mahogany desk. "Pull the IP routing tables and decrypt the transmitting frequency. Now."

Briggs moved swiftly, connecting the phone to an air-gapped forensic terminal. Within ninety seconds, lines of code cascaded down the dual monitors.

"The device was hard-routed to a private proxy in Zurich," Briggs reported, his jaw clenching as the decrypted logs populated. "The incoming credentials belong to Edmund Thorne."

The name hung in the cold air like venom.

Edmund was Gabriel’s older half-brother—a smooth-talking trustee who had long resented Gabriel’s appointment as the sole conservator of the Thorne Global legacy. Edmund had always claimed to love the children, visiting on weekends with extravagant gifts and playing the role of the doting uncle.

"He wasn't just eavesdropping, Mr. Thorne," Briggs continued, rotating the monitor. "He was tracking nursery schedules, private medical files, and documenting psychological distress logs. He was preparing to petition the probate court for emergency custodial removal, claiming you were an unfit, negligent father whose home was hazardous to Isabella’s mental health."

Gabriel walked to the floor-to-ceiling glass window, staring out over the black waters of the estate’s private lake. His dark neck tattoo shifted as he clenched his teeth. Edmund had deliberately terrorized a four-year-old child in the dark to manufacture evidence of neglect and seize control of the family trust.

"He chose the wrong battlefield," Gabriel said, his voice terrifyingly calm. "Edmund thinks power is measured in stock shares and legal tricks. He has no idea what a father is willing to tear down to protect his own."
