Chapter 3: The Sanctuary in the Pines

By sunrise, Gabriel had enacted an emergency relocation. He refused to let his children spend their recovery inside a house that felt tainted by surveillance and fear.
A convoy of discreet armored vehicles transported Gabriel, Elena, Isabella, and Mrs. Danvers three hours north into the Adirondack Mountains, arriving at The Haven—a private timber-and-granite estate secluded deep within a protected pine forest.
The property was bathed in golden morning light. The scent of wild cedar and freshwater filled the crisp air, and the rushing sound of a nearby mountain creek provided a natural, peaceful melody.
As Gabriel lifted Isabella from the car, the little girl looked up with wide, hesitant eyes at the towering pines. She held tightly onto Elena’s hand, her small body still tense with lingering apprehension.
"Is the man with the key here?" Isabella whispered, her voice fragile.
Gabriel crouched beside her on the stone walkway. He reached into his coat, pulled out a small, intricately carved wooden whistle shaped like a songbird, and placed it gently into her tiny hands.
"There are no keys here, Bella," Gabriel said, looking directly into her eyes with boundless tenderness. "And if you ever feel even a little bit scared, you blow this whistle. No matter where Daddy is, I will run to you in three seconds. Do you believe me?"
Isabella looked at the little wooden bird, then at Gabriel’s steady, reassuring smile. She placed the whistle around her neck, took a deep breath of the mountain air, and nodded.

"I believe you, Daddy," she whispered.
Elena stepped up beside Gabriel, her eyes shining with quiet relief. Gabriel placed an arm around Elena’s shoulders, pulling both of his daughters against his chest. For the first time in weeks, the heavy cloud of terror began to lift.
