Chapter 12: A Father’s Name

On a crisp autumn morning, Gabriel, Elena, and Marcus Vance entered the chambers of the Manhattan Probate and Family Court for a private, deeply significant proceeding.

Sitting before Judge Sterling once again, Gabriel placed a leather-bound petition on the desk.

"Your Honor," Marcus Vance stated. "We are here for the finalization of the formal adoption of Elena Pendelton Thorne."

Judge Sterling smiled warmly—a stark contrast to the stern demeanor she had held during Edmund's trial. She looked across the desk at eight-year-old Elena, who sat dressed in a pretty navy dress, holding Gabriel’s hand tightly.

"Elena," Judge Sterling asked gently. "Do you understand what this adoption means?"

Elena looked up at Gabriel, her hazel eyes filled with profound certainty. "It means Uncle Gabriel isn't just my guardian anymore. He’s my real dad. Forever."

Judge Sterling nodded, signing the official decree with a flourish of her fountain pen before stamping it with the state seal.

"By the authority vested in me, I declare Gabriel Thorne and Elena Thorne to be father and daughter, with all the rights, privileges, and love of family," the judge announced.

Elena threw her arms around Gabriel’s neck, burying her face in his shoulder as happy tears streamed down her cheeks. Gabriel held her tightly, feeling a deep, sacred completion settle within his soul.

"I’m proud of you, my daughter," Gabriel whispered into her ear. "Always and forever."
