Chapter 15: The Watch Under the Stars

Five years later, the summer twilight descended peacefully upon the Thorne estate in the Hudson Valley.

The lawn was alive with the sound of laughter and the warm glow of hanging paper lanterns. A long wooden picnic table was laden with grilled barbecue, fresh sweet corn, and homemade berry pies prepared by Mrs. Danvers.

Thirteen-year-old Elena sat at the table, helping a group of younger children from the foundation's summer camp sketch portraits of the lake. She was poised, brilliant, and confident—a young woman whose fierce compassion inspired everyone around her.

Nine-year-old Isabella was running through the grass with a golden retriever puppy, her melodious laughter ringing across the meadow as she chased fireflies beneath the ancient oak trees.

Gabriel stood on the stone terrace, holding a glass of iced tea, watching his family thrive in the golden twilight. His dark hair was touched with faint silver at the temples, but his eyes were filled with an enduring, profound tranquility.

Isabella ran up the terrace steps, her cheeks flushed with joy, holding a small glass jar containing two glowing fireflies.

"Look, Daddy! We caught the stars!" Isabella cheered, holding the jar up to the sky.

Gabriel chuckled, kneeling down to wrap his arms around her. "They look beautiful, sweetheart. But remember, the brightest stars belong in the open sky."

Together, they unscrewed the lid, watching the tiny points of light float gracefully up toward the canopy of trees and into the vast, starlit heavens.

Elena walked over, resting her hand on Gabriel’s shoulder as the three of them stood together beneath the quiet night sky.

There were no listening devices in the dark. There were no keys to fear.

Bound by an unbreakable vow, shielded by a father’s relentless devotion, and healed by the enduring power of love, the family stood whole and free—safe beneath a watch that would never end.
