Chapter 9: The House by the Pines

Recognizing that the bustling city penthouse carried too many echoes of confinement, Julian purchased a sun-drenched timber and stone home in the rolling hills of Upstate New York, surrounded by whispering pine forests, open meadows, and a clear freshwater lake.
The property was a haven of natural light. Large bay windows allowed golden sunshine to flood every room, and the scent of wild cedar and lavender filled the air. There were no cold marble hallways or towering elevators—only soft oak floors, cozy fireplaces, and a sprawling backyard that stretched into the meadow.
On the day they moved in, Mia stepped out onto the wide wooden porch. The autumn breeze ruffled her blonde hair as she looked at the vast expanse of green grass and wildflowers.
"Can I... walk?" she asked hesitantly, looking up at Julian.
Julian crouched beside her, holding her hand. "You can run, Mia. You can run as far as you want. The whole field is yours."

With a tentative step, Mia stepped off the porch onto the soft grass. She took another step, then another, and suddenly, she broke into an uninhibited, joyous run, her arms outstretched like a little bird taking flight for the first time.
Watching her from the porch, Martha wiped her apron across her eyes, while Julian smiled, his heart swelling with peace.
