Chapter 10: Barnaby and the Butter Cookies

A month into their new life in the countryside, Julian visited a local animal rescue shelter. Sitting in the corner of a sunlit pen was a scruffy, gentle golden retriever mix named Barnaby, who had been rescued from abandonment. The dog’s calm, soulful brown eyes seemed to hold the same quiet resilience that Julian recognized in his daughter.

When Julian brought Barnaby home, the introduction was handled with extreme care. Barnaby did not jump or bark; instead, the dog trotted gently across the living room and laid his chin softly upon Mia’s lap.

Mia froze for a second, then tentatively stroked the soft fur behind the dog's ears. A warm, melodic giggle—pure, ringing, and entirely free of fear—escaped her lips.

"He likes me, Daddy!" Mia cried out in delight.

"He loves you, Mia," Julian replied, sitting beside them on the rug.

Later that afternoon, the kitchen was filled with the sweet aroma of vanilla and roasted butter. Floured handprints covered the low wooden island as Julian, Mia, and Martha baked homemade butter cookies together. Mia was allowed to shape the dough however she pleased, laughing heartily as Barnaby patiently waited under the counter for fallen crumbs.

The kitchen, once a place of terror and deprivation, had been permanently reclaimed as a sanctuary of warmth, nourishment, and joyous memories.
