Chapter 2: The Severing

The click of designer heels echoed down the grand hallway before the door even swung open. Evelyn Cross stepped into the penthouse, shaking water from her custom trench coat, her smile radiant and practiced.

"Julian, darling? You’re home three days early from London," she called out musically, walking toward the kitchen with effortless grace. "I had no idea you were arriving. I would have had the private chef prepare—"

Her voice died in her throat as she stepped onto the checkered floor.

Julian stood by the island, Mia securely cradled in his left arm, wrapped in a plush wool blanket from the living room. In his right hand, Julian held the stainless-steel pet bowl. His face was entirely devoid of warmth, carved from lethal marble.

"Julian... what are you doing with that?" Evelyn forced a light, dismissive laugh, though her eyes flickered toward the dropped shopping bags. "You know how toddlers make messes. Mia has been being difficult all afternoon, refusing her lunch, acting out—"

"Stop," Julian said. His voice was not loud, but it resonated with a terrifying, absolute finality that froze Evelyn in her tracks.

"You told me she was thriving under your care while I managed the overseas merger," Julian stepped forward, his eyes locking onto hers. "You told me she was happy. You made me believe you loved my daughter as if she were your own."

"I do!" Evelyn insisted, stepping back as Julian advanced. "I’m raising her with discipline! A child of the Vance legacy cannot grow up soft and entitled. Sometimes tough love is necessary—"

"This is not discipline," Julian cut her off, his voice trembling with contained fury as he dropped the metal dish onto the marble counter with a deafening clatter. "This is cruelty. This is abuse."

He pulled out his phone with a single flick of his thumb. "Security is already downstairs with the police. You have ten minutes to take your personal belongings and leave my property. If you ever come within a thousand feet of my daughter again, I will dismantle everything your family name stands for."

Evelyn's polished mask fractured, revealing cold spite. "You think you can handle her alone? You’re an absentee father, Julian! You’ll fail!"

"I failed the moment I trusted you," Julian replied coldly, turning his back on her as security personnel entered the foyer. "Get out."
