Chapter 11: The Halls of Justice

Winter arrived, blanketing the pine forests in pristine white snow. In late January, Julian traveled back to the metropolitan district court for the final sentencing hearing of Evelyn Cross.
The courtroom was quiet and somber. Evelyn sat at the defense table in plain custody clothing, stripped of her designer finery and aristocratic vanity. The irrefutable digital evidence, medical testimonies, and financial records left the defense with no plausible arguments.
The presiding judge, an experienced and stern jurist, adjusted her glasses before delivering the verdict.
"The calculated exploitation and abuse of a defenseless child under the pretense of care is an egregious betrayal of human decency," the judge proclaimed. "The defendant showed no remorse, prioritizing vanity and control over the life of an innocent toddler."

Evelyn Cross was sentenced to nine years in state correctional custody without parole, alongside full restitution orders and permanent lifetime protective injunctions.
As the bailiffs led Evelyn away in handcuffs, she looked back at Julian, her eyes hollow with defeat. Julian did not look at her with malice or triumph. He looked at her with the calm detachment of a man who had completely closed a dark chapter, leaving no room for hatred to poison his heart.
