Chapter 5: Whispers in the Dark

The first week was defined by fragile, tentative steps.
Mia refused to eat if anyone was standing over her. Whenever a plate of warm, freshly prepared food was placed before her, she would shrink back, looking up with wide, questioning eyes, waiting for permission or a harsh reprimand.
Julian refused to go into the office. He had his executive assistant reroute all boardroom meetings to virtual summaries and delegated operational leadership to his trusted chief operating officer. His entire world was now centered within the four walls of the dining room.
On Tuesday evening, Martha placed a bowl of warm chicken porridge on the low coffee table where Mia sat on a soft velvet cushion. Mia did not touch the spoon. She simply stared at the steam rising from the bowl, her little hands clenched tightly into fists in her lap.
Julian sat down cross-legged on the floor beside her, matching her eye level. He took a small spoon, dipped it into the bowl, and ate a small portion himself with an exaggerated smile of delight.
"It’s very good, Mia," Julian whispered gently. "It’s warm, and it’s all for you. You don’t have to finish it, and no one will ever take it away."

Mia looked from the bowl to her father’s face. She saw no impatience, no anger, only calm, boundless love. Slowing her breathing, she reached out her tiny hand, picked up the spoon, and took a small bite.
A tiny, fragile sigh left her lips. For the first time in months, she ate without fear. Sitting beside her, Julian felt a single tear roll down his cheek, knowing that healing had finally begun.
