Chapter 3: The Dark Brick Tunnel

The transition from the gleaming silver elevator to the underground maintenance shaft was like stepping into another century. The air down here was damp, smelling of wet earth, mortar, and cold stone.
Luca led the way, holding a heavy-duty tactical flashlight in his right hand. The bright, concentrated beam cut through the absolute blackness of the low-ceilinged brick tunnel, bouncing off rough-hewn walls that hadn't seen daylight in decades. Every step we took produced a hollow, echoing crunch against the gravel floor.
I stayed close behind him, my boots slipping slightly on the uneven ground. Up ahead, Luca stopped abruptly and turned around, sweeping the flashlight beam back. The harsh white light caught the side of my neck, illuminating the delicate silver chain I wore hidden beneath my collar.
A small circular pendant caught the beam, flashing a blinding reflection against the dark brick wall as we pressed ourselves sideways to navigate a narrow pinch point in the corridor.
Luca noticed. He stopped dead in his tracks, shining the light directly onto my throat. His dark eyes flicked from the pendant to my face, reading the tension written in every line of my posture.
“Why did you save me?” he asked softly, his voice echoing off the damp masonry.
The question wasn't about the hallway anymore. It wasn't even about the elevator. It hung in the dark space between us, stark and heavy. He was looking at me not as a maid who had crossed a line, but as a puzzle he couldn't solve, a variable he hadn't accounted for in his pristine, calculated world.
I pressed my back harder against the cold, rough bricks, the chill biting through the thin fabric of my dress. The flashlight beam held steady between us, casting long, grotesque shadows against the curved ceiling of the tunnel.

“Because,” I whispered, the word catching on a sudden intake of breath, “if you had walked through those doors tonight, you would have found out what your father buried down here. And they wouldn’t have let either of us walk back out.”
Luca didn’t lower the light. His expression didn't soften, but something flickered deep within his dark eyes—a dangerous, calculating spark.
