Chapter 2: The Silver Elevator

The private elevator car was lined with polished brushed silver panels that reflected our distorted images back at us like funhouse glass. As the heavy doors slid shut, cutting off the distant murmur of the gala below, the oppressive quiet settled back over us.

Luca didn’t push me away, but his presence filled the small space entirely. He stood with his arms relaxed at his sides, though every muscle in his frame was coiled tight. His gaze remained fixed on my face, searching for a flaw in my composure.

With a frantic, trembling motion, I reached out and slammed my palm down on the red emergency stop button.

The soft, ambient hum of the elevator died instantly. The carriage shuddered once and ground to a complete halt between floors, plunging us into a dim, amber-tinted twilight powered by emergency backup strips.

Luca didn't blink. He watched my hand leave the button and return to clutch the white fabric apron at my waist. His voice, when it finally broke the silence, was remarkably steady, carrying a low, gravelly timbre that vibrated in the small metal box.

“Tell me what happened,” he commanded. It wasn’t a request. It was the voice of a man accustomed to extracting confessions from unwilling subjects.

I swallowed hard, my throat aching. The air in the elevator felt thin, heavy with the scent of his cedarwood cologne mixed with the metallic tang of fear and old dust. I knew the risk I was taking. By stopping this elevator, by defying the master of the house, I had stepped off a cliff. There was no climbing back up.

“You think you know what’s behind those doors,” I said, my voice barely above a whisper, though it held a sharp, bitter edge. “You think it’s just another empty office, another file room for your security contracts. It’s not.”

Luca leaned in slightly, invading my space, his intense gaze locking onto my wide, terrified eyes. He didn’t raise his voice. He didn't threaten me. He simply waited, letting the terrifying weight of his authority press down on my shoulders until I felt like I might break.

“You have five seconds to explain why my own employee just assaulted me in the hallway before I let the doors open,” he said quietly, his eyes never leaving mine.
