Chapter 12: Public Exposure

The rustle of turning pages inside the boardroom sounded like dry leaves in a winter wind. Several junior board members leaned forward, their eyes darting across the yellowed documents and the original land transfer deed that Luca had laid bare across the glass table. Right in the center of the incriminating papers sat the small silver ring with the D.D. engraving, catching the harsh fluorescent glare. Gerald stood up abruptly, his hands gripping the edge of the mahogany table, his knuckles turning white as his controlled facade finally shattered under the weight of undeniable proof.
“This is nothing more than forged paper and disgruntled staff conspiring to extort the family,” Gerald stammered, his voice rising in pitch, losing its polished authority. He looked around the room, expecting the usual nods of agreement from his loyalists, but the men around the table remained frozen, avoiding his gaze. They knew better than to tie their names to a sinking ship when Luca stood before them with absolute, unyielding coldness in his eyes.
I stepped forward, my voice steady despite the rapid pounding of my heart. “It isn't extortion, Gerald. It’s a paper trail. You forced Daniel to sign away his inheritance under threat of total ruin, and when he refused to stay quiet, your security detail made sure he never walked off this property.”

Luca turned his head slightly, his gaze softening for a fraction of a second as he looked at me, acknowledging the pain and the courage behind my words before turning back to the room. He reached into his coat pocket and pulled out a sleek digital recorder, setting it beside the file. With a single press of his thumb, the tinny audio of an old administrative meeting filled the room—Gerald’s voice clear as day, ordering the suppression of the investigation into Daniel's disappearance.
The executives shifted uncomfortably in their leather chairs. One by one, the older loyalists began closing their briefcases, standing up in silence and heading for the double doors without uttering a single word of defense. Gerald sank back into his high-backed leather chair, defeated, as the reality of his impending ruin settled over him. Outside, the distant sirens of municipal authorities began to wail, cutting through the night air and signaling the end of an era built on hidden truths.
