Chapter 11: The Boardroom Confrontation

The mahogany doors of the DeLuca corporate boardroom loomed ahead, thick enough to muffle the hum of the city outside and the relentless chatter of the charity gala still echoing from the lower floors. My fingers instinctively brushed against the silver necklace tucked beneath my collar, feeling the faint, reassuring outline of the tiny ring engraved with D.D. Luca stood beside me in his sharp black tuxedo, his jaw set in a hard line, his intense gaze fixed on the brass handle. He didn’t knock. He simply reached out, turned the heavy latch, and pushed the door open with a quiet, deliberate click.

Inside, the long glass-topped table was surrounded by senior executives and family loyalists who had spent decades burying the estate's darkest secrets. My uncle Gerald, sitting at the head of the table with a gold fountain pen poised in his hand, looked up with an expression of cold annoyance. The murmurs around the room died instantly as Luca stepped across the threshold, his dark wavy hair catching the stark overhead light, a visible ripple of unease moving through the men who thought they owned the empire.

“Luca,” Gerald said, his voice dropping into a smooth, practiced cadence that masked underlying panic. “This meeting is closed. You have no business here tonight, especially not dragging the domestic staff into corporate chambers.”

“Sit down, Gerald,” Luca replied softly, his voice cutting through the stale air like a blade.

I followed him into the room, refusing to shrink under the weight of a dozen hostile eyes. I had spent years scrubbing marble floors and swallowing my grief in silence, but standing here with the original land deeds and Daniel’s signed payout clause heavy in our possession, the fear finally began to give way to a cold, steady resolve. Luca didn't shout or slam doors; he simply walked to the center of the table, pulled the manila folder from his jacket, and dropped it onto the glass surface with a sharp slap that echoed against the high ceilings.

“We aren't here to discuss quarterly earnings,” Luca said, his eyes locking onto Gerald’s pale face. “We are here to discuss what happened to Daniel twenty years ago, and the fraudulent signatures used to steal his family's land to build this very foundation.”

Gerald’s pen slipped from his fingers, clattering against the glass. The silence that followed was absolute, heavy with the realization that the carefully constructed wall of public glamour and private corruption was finally cracking wide open.
