Chapter 14: Safehouse Quiet

The safehouse sat on a quiet ridge overlooking the city skyline, far removed from the marble halls and glittering chandeliers of the DeLuca estate. Inside, the rooms were sparse, warmed only by the amber glow of a small gas fireplace and the soft light of a single floor lamp. The frantic energy of the raid and the flashing camera lights of the courtyard had faded into a deep, heavy silence. I sat on the edge of a tweed armchair, staring down at the silver necklace resting in my palm, feeling the smooth metal of the tiny ring engraved with D.D.

The front door clicked open, and Luca walked in, shrugging off his black tuxedo jacket and loosening his tie. The sharp, untouchable billionaire image he had worn like armor for years was entirely gone. He looked tired, lines of genuine exhaustion etched around his eyes, yet there was a profound sense of lightness in his posture—a man who had finally purged the rot from his own family's foundation. He walked into the kitchen, returning a moment later with two mugs of black coffee, handing one to me before taking a seat on the opposite sofa.

“The federal prosecutors have all the ledgers,” Luca said softly, staring into his cup before looking up at me. “Gerald is being held without bail. The board has dissolved itself. Everything my family built on top of those lies is gone.”

“It had to fall, Luca,” I said, taking a slow sip of the warm coffee. “Keeping it standing meant keeping Daniel’s memory buried in the dark. I didn't save you down in that tunnel just to preserve an empire. I saved you because you were the only one inside those walls who still knew how to look someone in the eye.”

Luca fell silent, the weight of his words hanging in the quiet air between us. He reached out and placed his coffee mug on the wooden table, his gaze locking onto mine with an intense, quiet vulnerability that words couldn't capture. It wasn't the romance of high society or the desperate survival of the working staff; it was an honest, hard-won connection forged in the underground brick tunnels and tested by the fires of truth. For the first time, the shadow of the past felt like something we could finally leave behind.
