Chapter 13: Courtyard Fallout

The chill of the autumn night hit my skin as Luca and I stepped out through the grand arched exits of the estate and into the wide marble courtyard. Behind us, the glowing chandeliers of the gala cast long, distorted shadows across the stone fountains, but the festive atmosphere had completely dissolved into chaos. Flashes from news cameras illuminated the perimeter gates as reporters scrambled to capture the sudden, unexpected downfall of the DeLuca foundation. Security guards stood paralyzed near the entrance, unsure of who to obey now that the board had fractured and the police cruisers were blocking the driveway with flashing red and blue lights.
I pulled my black and white maid's apron tighter around my shoulders, feeling the cool wind sweep across the open square. For the first time in years, the heavy burden I had carried in secret didn't feel quite so crushing. Luca walked closely beside me, his tall frame acting as a silent shield against the blinding glare of the media lights and the chaotic shouting of journalists calling out our names.
“They’re going to ask questions,” Luca said quietly, his voice low and steady as we paused near the fountain. He turned to face me, his dark eyes reflecting the flashing emergency lights. “About your history here, about Daniel, about what happens next. You don’t have to answer them alone anymore.”

“I’m not afraid of the questions anymore, Luca,” I replied, looking directly into his gaze with a faint, weary smile. “For a long time, silence was the only way to survive in this place. But hiding kept the ghosts alive. Now that the truth is out in the open, they have nowhere left to hide.”
A federal investigator in a dark trench coat broke through the media perimeter, stepping toward us with a polite nod and a notepad in hand. Luca stepped forward slightly, placing a protective hand near my elbow—not out of control or ownership, but as a genuine gesture of shared support. We stood side-by-side in the harsh light, ready to face whatever legal reckoning awaited the estate, knowing that the wall between public glamour and private horror had finally been torn down for good.
