Chapter 8: The Garden of Healing

With the arrival of spring, the estate began to shed its old, imposing coldness.

Sofia took it upon herself to restore the overgrown conservatory and formal gardens that had been neglected since the passing of Lorenzo’s mother. On weekends, the manicured grounds were alive with the sound of music and laughter.

Emilia ran through the stone paths with a new golden retriever puppy named Barnaby, chasing butterflies across the expansive lawns. Sofia worked alongside the estate gardeners, planting beds of English roses, white hydrangeas, and sweet jasmine.

Lorenzo found himself spending less time locked away in corporate boardrooms and more time on the terrace, watching the life and color return to his home.

One sunny Saturday afternoon, Lorenzo walked down to the conservatory where Sofia was repotting an antique orchid. He took off his linen jacket, rolled up his sleeves, and picked up a trowel.

"Let me help with the compost," Lorenzo offered.

Sofia laughed, wiping a speck of soil from her cheek with the back of her wrist. "Mr. Moretti, billionaires do not get dirt under their fingernails."

"This billionaire does when it means working beside the most talented archivist in New York," Lorenzo replied with a warm, teasing smile.

As they worked together under the glass roof of the greenhouse, surrounded by the sweet fragrance of blooming jasmine, Lorenzo felt the lingering shadows of his own past begin to dissolve. For years, he had lived as a guardian of wealth and power, believing that isolation was the price of survival. But in Sofia’s quiet strength and Emilia’s innocent joy, he had found a purpose far greater than any empire: the warmth of a true family.
