Chapter 1: The Ice and the Fire

The cold water dripped from Sofia’s dark eyelashes, mingling with hot, silent tears of humiliation. On the pristine cream marble floor of the Moretti grand foyer, she remained kneeling, her yellow rubber cleaning gloves squeaking against the wet stone. Above her stood Bianca Valenti, holding the empty crystal pitcher, her tailored white dress immaculate, her mouth still twisted in an ugly sneer.
Behind them, framed in the grand arched doorway, Lorenzo Moretti stood like an immovable monolith carved from granite and iron.
The silence in the foyer was deafening. The ticking of the antique grandfather clock sounded like hammer blows against an anvil. Lorenzo’s dark eyes, sharp and predatory, did not blink. The ink of the intricate gothic tattoo tracing up his neck shifted slightly as the muscles along his jaw tightened into steel bands.
"Lorenzo..." Bianca stammered, her voice suddenly losing its venomous bite, replaced by a brittle, desperate flutter. She lowered the crystal pitcher, her manicured fingers trembling against the glass. "You’re back from Milan so soon? I was... I was simply disciplining the help. She has been completely insubordinate, tracking water through the hall, speaking out of turn—"
"Silence," Lorenzo said.
The word was not shouted. It was delivered in a deep, guttural register that vibrated through the marble floor beneath their feet. It carried the absolute authority of a man whose command had never been questioned in the history of the Moretti empire.
Lorenzo walked forward. He did not spare a glance at Bianca. Instead, he dropped heavily onto both knees directly into the puddle of ice water before Sofia.
Without hesitation, Lorenzo shrugged out of his tailored midnight-black suit jacket. With immense, deliberate gentleness, he draped the heavy, warm wool over Sofia’s shivering, drenched shoulders. His large, tattooed hands rested softly upon her trembling arms.
"Mr. Moretti..." Sofia choked out, her breath ragged, her teeth chattering from the cold shock. "I'm so sorry... I didn't mean to make a scene, but she... she told me that if I didn't sign the resignation and leave immediately, she would call social services on my daughter..."
Lorenzo looked into Sofia’s eyes. He saw no greed, no malice—only the terrifying, primal agony of a mother whose child was under threat.
"You will never apologize for protecting your flesh and blood under my roof," Lorenzo whispered, his voice softening into a steady, protective shield. "You are safe now, Sofia. I give you my word."
Lorenzo rose to his feet. When he turned back toward Bianca, the tenderness vanished entirely. His countenance became an impenetrable mask of lethal, chilling judgment.
"Get out of my house," Lorenzo stated.

Bianca gasped, stepping backward until her stiletto heel hit the base of a Roman column. "Lorenzo, you can't be serious! We are to be married in six months! Our families have unified investments! You would humiliate me over an agency maid?"
"You humiliated yourself the moment you treated another human being like dirt beneath your feet," Lorenzo replied, stepping toward her with predatory grace. "The engagement is terminated. The Valenti merger is revoked. You have five minutes to leave this estate before security removes you by force."
