Chapter 11: A Father's First Steps

With the arrival of autumn, four-year-old Emilia prepared to enter preschool at the prestigious St. Jude’s Academy.
On the first morning of school, Lorenzo refused to send a driver. He dressed in a simple navy suit, while Sofia wore a modest beige coat, and together they walked Emilia up the stone steps of the school courtyard.
Emilia held onto Lorenzo’s index finger with her tiny hand, looking nervously at the crowd of children and parents gathered near the entrance.
"Mr. Lorenzo?" Emilia asked, looking up with wide, hesitant hazel eyes. "What if the other kids don't want to share the crayons?"
Lorenzo knelt down on the cobblestone walkway, adjusting the straps of her little yellow backpack. He pulled a small silver coin from his pocket—an antique medal depicting a soaring eagle—and placed it into her palm.
"This was given to me by my mother when I was your age, Emilia," Lorenzo said with an encouraging smile. "Whenever you feel shy or scared, you hold this eagle in your pocket. It will remind you that you are brave, you are smart, and that your mother and I will be waiting right here when the school bell rings."
Emilia closed her fingers over the cool silver coin, her face brightening with confidence. She threw her small arms around Lorenzo’s neck, hugging him tightly. "I love you, Mr. Lorenzo!"

Lorenzo froze for a second, a profound wave of emotion catching in his throat, before wrapping his arms around the little girl and kissing her temple. "I love you too, sweetheart."
Sofia stood beside them, brushing away happy tears as she watched the once-isolated child skip confidently through the school doors toward her new future.
