Chapter 13: The Legal Decree

The following month, Lorenzo, Sofia, and Marcus Delgado gathered in the private chambers of Judge Evelyn Sterling at the Manhattan Family Court.
Judge Sterling, an experienced and esteemed jurist, reviewed the extensive legal petitions resting on her desk.
"Mr. Moretti," Judge Sterling spoke, looking over her spectacles with a warm, approving smile. "You have submitted petitions for the formal legal adoption of Emilia Rossi, alongside a joint declaration of familial guardianship."
Judge Sterling turned her gaze toward five-year-old Emilia, who sat proudly on the large leather chair between Lorenzo and Sofia. "Emilia, do you understand what this adoption means?"
Emilia looked up at Lorenzo, her eyes shining with absolute certainty. "It means Mr. Lorenzo is my real daddy now. And he promised we're going to eat waffles under the moon whenever we want."
Judge Sterling chuckled warmly, picking up her gold fountain pen and signing the official state decree with a flourish.

"By the power vested in me by the State of New York," Judge Sterling proclaimed, "I hereby declare Lorenzo Moretti to be the legal father of Emilia Rossi Moretti, with all the rights, duties, and unconditional love of family."
Emilia leaped off the chair and jumped straight into Lorenzo’s arms. Lorenzo lifted his daughter into the air, holding her against his chest as joyful tears escaped his eyes. Sofia stepped into his embrace, and the three of them stood together in the quiet courtroom, permanently bound by law, truth, and love.
