Chapter 6: A Life Reclaimed

The following morning brought a radiant sunrise that flooded the estate’s dining terrace with golden autumn light.

For the first time in her life, four-year-old Emilia sat at a dining table covered with fresh fruit platters, warm croissants, blueberry waffles, and fresh orange juice. She kicked her small legs happily, swinging them back and forth from the cushioned chair.

Lorenzo sat at the head of the table, dressed in a casual charcoal cashmere sweater, reading the morning financial papers.

On the front page of the Wall Street Chronicle, the headline screamed: VALENTI ENTERPRISES COLLAPSES UNDER FEDERAL FRAUD INVESTIGATION; MORETTI GROUP TERMINATES ALL AFFILIATIONS.

Emilia looked across the table at Lorenzo, her hazel eyes sparkling with curiosity. "Mr. Lorenzo?"

Lorenzo lowered the newspaper, looking at the little girl with warm, attentive eyes. "Yes, Emilia?"

"Are waffles only for breakfast, or can you eat them when the moon comes out too?"

Lorenzo let out a rich, deep laugh that startled Mrs. Rossi, who was pouring coffee in the corner. It was a sound that had not echoed through the halls of the Moretti estate in over a decade.

"In this house, Emilia," Lorenzo replied with a grin, "if you want waffles under the moon, Chef Antonio will make you waffles under the moon."

Sofia walked onto the terrace, carrying a leather notebook. Seeing her daughter laughing with the formidable billionaire brought a flush of color and a radiant smile to her face.

"Lorenzo," Sofia said, sitting down at the table. "I cannot simply sit in the guest suite doing nothing. I am ready to work. If you need the east gallery polished, or the library cataloged—"

"Sofia," Lorenzo interrupted gently, sliding a freshly printed contract across the table toward her. "You are no longer a maid."

Sofia paused, her eyes widening in confusion. "What do you mean?"

"Before your father passed, you completed three years of an art history and archival management degree at Columbia," Lorenzo explained. "The Moretti Historical Trust manages four private museums and our family’s extensive collection of Renaissance art. I need an assistant director with uncorrupted integrity to oversee the cataloging and preservation projects. The position is yours, with full executive benefits and housing."

Sofia stared at the contract, her vision blurring with tears. "Lorenzo... I don't know what to say. This is... this is my dream."

"You earned it, Sofia," Lorenzo said softly. "Not as charity, but as justice."
