Chapter 4: The Ledger of Deceit

By eight o’clock that evening, Lorenzo sat behind the massive mahogany desk in his private library. The room was bathed in the warm amber glow of banker’s lamps, the walls lined with thousands of leather-bound volumes.

Across the desk sat Marcus Delgado, Lorenzo’s chief intelligence officer and long-time legal strategist.

"Bianca didn't act out of simple arrogance, Lorenzo," Marcus said, laying a thick black binder onto the polished wood. "Our internal forensic audit on the Valenti Maritime partnership came back two hours ago. Look at page twelve."

Lorenzo opened the dossier. His eyes narrowed as he scanned the balance sheets.

For eighteen months, Bianca’s brother and father had been skimming millions of dollars from the Moretti Children’s Educational Foundation—a multi-million-dollar philanthropic trust established in memory of Lorenzo’s late mother.

"Sofia discovered it," Marcus explained. "Two days ago, while cleaning the private office in the east wing, Sofia found the duplicated shipping manifests that Bianca had carelessly left in the shredder bin. Sofia brought them to Mrs. Rossi, asking if they were important documents before disposing of them. Bianca found out and realized her family’s embezzlement was about to be exposed."

Lorenzo closed the binder with a dull, heavy thud. The puzzle pieces fell into place with terrifying clarity. Bianca hadn't just thrown water on a maid; she had attempted to terrorize, blackmail, and silence a whistleblower to protect her family’s criminal syndicate.

"They used my mother’s memorial foundation to launder stolen money," Lorenzo said, his voice dropping into a register of icy stillness that Marcus recognized all too well. "And they tried to break an innocent mother and child to cover their tracks."

"The District Attorney’s office is waiting for your signal, Lorenzo," Marcus stated. "We have enough to freeze all Valenti commercial assets by midnight."

"Do not just freeze them, Marcus," Lorenzo replied, staring at the dark window overlooking the gardens. "Dismantle them. Every contract, every shipping lane, every offshore shell company. When the sun rises tomorrow, the Valenti name will hold no power in this city."
