Chapter 8: The Dignity of Soft Hands

Rather than hiding behind closed doors, Tom accompanied Helen into the grand foyer where two police detectives stood awkwardly alongside Victoria Kensington’s private legal representative.
The attorney, an arrogant man in a pinstripe suit, smirked as Helen walked into the room. "Miss Vance, you are advised to surrender the five-carat diamond brooch stolen from Miss Kensington’s suite during the gala, or face immediate custodial arrest."
Helen stood tall. Though her hands bore the marks of hard labor, her posture was regal, carrying the natural grace of a woman who had never compromised her integrity.
"I have spent twenty years working sixteen hours a day to earn an honest living," Helen spoke, her voice clear, steady, and devoid of fear. "I have scrubbed hospital floors, cleaned public restrooms, and carried heavy loads until my bones ached. But in all those years, I have never taken a single cent that did not belong to me."
The lead detective shifted uncomfortably, clearly unsettled by her quiet dignity.
Tom stepped forward, sliding a dossier across the marble console table. "Detective, before you proceed with a fraudulent claim, I suggest you review the timestamped security footage from the Bellevue Palace. Miss Kensington’s brooch was placed in her personal chauffeur’s glove compartment at 6:00 PM yesterday by her own assistant to fabricate this charge."
The attorney’s face paled.

"Furthermore," Tom continued, his voice echoing through the vaulted ceiling, "these documents contain evidence of criminal conspiracy, mechanical tampering, and attempted murder dating back to October 14, 2004, authorized by Richard Kensington against Helen Vance. I suggest you call your commissioner immediately."
The detectives opened the folder, their eyes widening as they absorbed the federal seals and bank manifests. Within moments, the attorney turned on his heel and fled, while the detectives formally apologized to Helen and retreated to execute federal arrest warrants.
