Chapter 14: Promises Written in Starlight

The formal adoption ceremony took place on a crisp autumn morning in the chambers of the family court. When the judge signed the final decree legally declaring Thomas Sterling as the father of Leo Vance Sterling, Leo leaped into Tom’s arms, wrapping his legs around Tom’s waist and burying his face in his neck.

"It’s official, buddy," Tom whispered, his eyes moist with joyful tears. "You’re stuck with me forever."

"I never want to be unstuck, Dad," Leo replied, giggling happily.

That evening, a private celebration was held under the starlit sky at the Sterling Manor. A long wooden dining table was set outside under the grand oak trees, illuminated by hundreds of hanging fairy lights.

Samuel, Martha, the estate gardeners, and close friends sat together, sharing homemade roasted chicken, warm sourdough bread, and fresh fruit pies. There were no formalities, no rigid protocols—only the ringing sound of genuine laughter, glasses clinking in sincere toasts, and the warmth of true companionship.

Later that night, as the guests departed and Leo slept peacefully in his room with his golden retriever curled at the foot of his bed, Tom and Helen walked out onto the stone terrace.

The autumn sky was clear and deep, filled with a million brilliant stars.

Tom wrapped his arms around Helen from behind, resting his chin gently upon her shoulder as the cool night breeze rustled the maple leaves.

"Are you happy, my love?" Tom whispered into the quiet dark.

"I am at peace, Tom," Helen murmured, leaning back against his chest, placing her hands over his. "We have walked through the deepest winter, and God has given us an everlasting spring."
