Chapter 11: The Secret Garden of Millbrook

A week later, Tom drove Helen to a secluded valley in Millbrook, two hours north of the city.

Leaving the car by the roadside, he led her down a winding stone path through a dense forest of weeping willows and ancient maples. At the end of the path stood an overgrown stone gazebo overlooking a crystal-clear spring lake—the very place where, twenty-one years prior, a young Thomas Sterling had first asked Helen Vance to be his wife.

The old wooden bench had weathered with time, and wild ivy climbed the stone pillars, but the tranquil beauty of the sanctuary remained untouched by the world.

Helen stopped, placing her hand over her heart as a wave of nostalgic warmth washed over her. "You remembered."

"I bought this entire valley the year you disappeared," Tom said softly, stepping into the gazebo. "Whenever the noise of the corporate world became too loud, I came here to speak to your memory. I promised the trees and the water that I would never love another woman."

He turned to face her, reaching into his coat pocket to produce a simple velvet box. Inside rested not a flashy modern diamond, but the original antique sapphire ring that had belonged to his great-grandmother—the ring Helen had never had the chance to wear.

"We cannot rewrite the twenty years that were stolen from us, Helen," Tom said, his voice trembling with profound devotion as he looked into her eyes. "But we can write every day that remains. Will you marry me, and let me be a father to our son?"

Helen looked at the ring, then up into the face of the man who had loved her through life, death, and resurrection.

"Yes, Tom," she whispered, her smile radiant with timeless grace. "A thousand times, yes."
