Chapter 4: The Boy with Golden Eyes
The morning sun broke gently through the velvet curtains of the Sterling Manor, painting the mahogany library in shades of amber. Outside, the autumn leaves danced across the stone terrace.
"And Leo?" Tom asked gently, not with suspicion, but with genuine reverence. "Tell me about our little boy upstairs."
A radiant, beautiful light illuminated Helen’s tired features—the unmistakable glow of maternal devotion.
"Seven years ago, when my memory began to piece itself together, I was working as a night cleaner at an underfunded community hospital in Philadelphia," Helen explained softly. "One stormy night in November, a young woman arrived in labor. She gave birth to a baby boy and passed away hours later from severe complications. The infant had no family, no records, and the state was preparing to send him to a crowded institutional foster care center."
She paused, swallowing the emotion rising in her throat.
"I looked into that infant's bassinet," Helen continued. "He had these big, soulful hazel eyes that looked straight into my soul. I had nothing—no wealth, no home, barely enough money for a bowl of soup. But I knew what it felt like to be abandoned and forgotten by the world. I couldn't let him grow up without a mother's warmth."
Tom listened, his heart aching with profound admiration. "You adopted him."

"It took three years of legal battles, working three separate cleaning shifts a day to pay for social worker evaluations and court fees," Helen nodded, a tear slipping down her cheek. "I named him Leo, because from the day he was born, he had the brave heart of a lion. He gave me a reason to wake up every morning. When I had no food, seeing him smile kept me alive."
Tom reached out, cupping Helen’s face in his palms with infinite tenderness. "You gave an orphaned child a mother's unconditional love when you had nothing left to give yourself. You are the noblest soul I have ever known, Helen. From this day forward, Leo is my son. He will carry the Sterling name, and he will never know hardship again."
