Chapter 10: Learning to Fly Again

With the shadows of the past permanently cleared, life at Sterling Manor bloomed with simple, authentic joy.
On a bright Saturday morning, the expansive gravel driveway was cleared of luxury vehicles. In their place stood a small, bright-blue two-wheeled bicycle with silver handlebars.
Leo stood beside the bicycle, wearing a little red helmet, looking nervously at the two pedals.
"I don't know, Mr. Tom," Leo murmured, chewing his lower lip. "What if I fall? The gravel is hard."
Tom crouched down beside the boy, adjusting the strap of his helmet. "Everyone falls when they learn to ride, Leo. But the secret isn't avoiding the fall. The secret is knowing that I will be right behind you to catch you before you hit the ground."
Helen stood on the porch, wearing an apron as she held a pitcher of fresh lemonade, watching the two of them with tears of pure happiness in her eyes.
Tom placed his hands on the back of the bicycle seat, running alongside Leo as the boy began to pedal. Faster and faster they went down the paved path.
"Keep your eyes forward, Leo! You’ve got this!" Tom shouted with joyful encouragement.
Without Leo realizing it, Tom let go of the seat. The little boy continued pedaling on his own, balancing perfectly as the wind caught his hair.

"Look at me, Mommy! Look, Daddy! I'm flying!" Leo screamed with pure, unadulterated triumph.
Tom stopped in the middle of the path, catching his breath, watching the boy pedal toward the meadow. Hearing Leo call him Daddy for the first time struck Tom’s heart with the force of a tidal wave, filling every empty crevice of his existence with overwhelming purpose.
