Chapter 6: Midnight Return

The tires of my sedan crunched over the gravel driveway as I cut the engine, plunging the car into sudden, heavy silence. The grand estate loomed before me, its stately facade illuminated by automated security lights that offered a deceptive sense of safety. I grabbed my leather briefcase from the passenger seat, stepped out into the cool evening breeze, and hurried up the stone steps toward the grand foyer. The double doors were unlocked—a deliberate carelessness that set my teeth on edge. As I stepped inside, the familiar checkered black and white tiled floor stretched out beneath my feet, mirroring the fractured nature of my home life. I dropped my keys onto the mahogany console table and listened intently. The house was deathly quiet, save for the distant hum of the central air conditioning. Then, a faint, muffled sound echoed from the far end of the service corridor—a rhythmic thudding, like someone kicking against a wooden door. My heart skipped a beat. I broke into a fast, silent stride, following the noise toward the rear of the mansion. The sound was coming from the heavy oak door of the walk-in linen closet, a cramped space traditionally used for storing spare bedding and cleaning supplies. I grabbed the brass doorknob, twisted it hard, and threw the door open. Maria tumbled forward out of the darkness, catching herself on her hands against the hardwood floor. Her face was pale, her breathing ragged, and the fresh bruise on her cheek stood out starkly under the harsh overhead hallway lights. I dropped to my knees beside her, my hands hovering protectively as I helped her sit up. "Maria, what happened? Who did this to you?" I demanded in a harsh, furious whisper. She looked up at me with tear-filled eyes, her hands trembling as she clutched a folded piece of heavy cardstock against her chest. "She locked me in, Mr. Arthur," Maria gasped, her voice breaking. "She found out I talked to you. And she left this on my cot." I gently took the card from her fingers, unfolding it to reveal a printed legal termination notice, complete with forged signatures and menacing demands for immediate silence. The psychological war had escalated from covert intimidation to open, direct assault.
