Chapter 2: Nursery Silence

The second-floor nursery smelled faintly of baby powder and lavender oil, a comforting scent that clashed violently with the raw adrenaline still pumping through my veins. After carrying my son upstairs and locking the heavy mahogany door from the inside, I settled him gently into his crib. He quieted down almost immediately, his eyelids fluttering shut as exhaustion took over. I adjusted the mobile above him, my movements mechanical while my mind raced. The quiet of the room felt oppressive, heavy with unspoken secrets.
A soft tap sounded at the heavy wooden door. I turned slowly, my hand still resting on the polished wood of the crib rail. I walked across the plush carpet and pulled the door open just enough to see Maria standing in the dimly lit hallway. She kept her head bowed, her hands clasped tightly in front of her black maid uniform. The white collar and apron seemed startlingly bright against the dim shadows of the corridor.
"May I come in, Mr. Arthur?" she asked softly, her voice barely audible over the hum of the central heating.
"Come in, Maria. Lock the door behind you," I instructed, keeping my tone low and steady.
She stepped inside, her dark eyes darting nervously toward the crib before settling back on me. Up close, the bruise on her cheek looked even more vivid, a violent purple and yellow crescent moon that bespoke a brutal impact. I gestured toward the velvet armchair by the window, but she remained standing, clutching her apron strings until her knuckles were pale.
"Tell me everything," I said, leaning back against the edge of the mahogany changing table. "And don't leave anything out."
Maria swallowed hard, her chest rising and falling beneath the stiff cotton of her uniform. "It’s not just today, sir. It’s been happening for months. Whenever you take the late flights to the regional branches, Mrs. Elena changes. She... she loses her temper if he cries for more than a minute. She says he's ruining her social life, her figure. Today, she tried to take him out of his crib while he had a fever, and when I tried to stop her, she shoved me against the wall."
The words hit me like physical blows. I thought of Elena’s polished public persona, the charity boards she chaired, the radiant smiles she flashed for the society photographers at every weekend gala. The contrast between that glowing public surface and this hidden domestic terror made my stomach churn.
"Why didn't you come to me sooner?" I asked, though I already knew the bitter answer.

"She threatened to fire me, sir. To make sure no family in the tri-state area would ever hire a Latina maid again. She said she owns the local employment agencies. And... and she threatened the baby. Said accidents happen to clumsy people." Maria's voice broke on the last word, and a single tear traced its way down past her bruised cheek.
I looked at my sleeping son, then back at the brave woman standing before me. I reached out and placed a reassuring hand on her shoulder, feeling her tense muscles relax just a fraction. "You are safe here now, Maria. You have my word. No one will ever touch you or my son in this house again."
