Chapter 1: The Foyer Warning

The tires of my sedan crunched over the gravel driveway before sliding smoothly onto the black-and-white checkered tiles of the grand entryway. I killed the engine, the digital clock glowing silently against the dash. It was six in the evening, two hours earlier than my scheduled return from the downtown corporate office, yet the heavy oak front door stood wide open, letting the damp evening breeze sweep through the marble hallway. My tailored grey suit jacket felt suddenly restrictive against my shoulders as I stepped out, my golden wristwatch catching the dim porch light.
Inside, the silence was broken only by a sharp, terrified intake of breath. I rushed across the threshold, my hard-soled shoes echoing loudly. There, lying near the base of the grand staircase, was a tiny white baby onesie resting against the tiled floor. My son was there, barely drawing breath. Maria, our thirty-two-year-old Latina maid, was kneeling beside him with outstretched, trembling hands. Her dark hair was usually pinned back with absolute precision, but now stray strands clung to her damp forehead. A dark, ugly bruise mottled her left cheek, and a fresh scratch traced down toward her jawline. Elena stood a few feet away, her long dark dress statuesque against the white pillars, her expression a mask of chilling, calculated detachment.
"Maria!" I shouted, the word tearing from my throat as I dropped urgently to my knees beside the infant.
My hands hovered for a fraction of a second before I scooped my boy into my arms, pressing his small, warm chest against mine. He let out a weak, sputtering cry that drove a spike of ice straight through my heart. I looked up, my eyes locking onto Maria. Tears tracked through the dust on her bruised face, and her lips quivered as she stared at me with desperate, pleading intensity.
"She hurts the baby whenever you're away!" Maria whispered, her voice cracking with a terror that went far deeper than physical pain.
My hand, adorned with my grandfather's gold wristwatch, clenched tightly onto the soft white baby blanket in fierce, protective anger. My knuckles turned stark white. I leaned down close to the cold marble floor, breathing heavily with wide, furious eyes, glaring forward while Elena stood blurred in the background, refusing to step closer.

"You dared to lay a hand on my son!" I snarled, my voice vibrating with a suppressed rage that shook the very foundation of the grand foyer.
Elena didn't flinch. She simply adjusted the strap of her high heel, her gaze cold and dismissive. But the seed of doubt, watered by Maria’s tearful confession and the physical mark on her cheek, had taken root. The pristine facade of our marriage cracked right down the middle, and I knew nothing in this house would ever be the same.
