Chapter 4: Missing Footage

The private study smelled of aged leather, pipe tobacco, and polished oak. The heavy mahogany door was locked from the inside, giving me the isolation I desperately needed. I sat in my high-backed leather desk chair, the glow of the dual monitor screens illuminating the dark room in a pale, sterile blue light. My fingers flew across the mechanical keyboard, punching in the master administrative credentials for the estate's closed-circuit security system.
The software interface loaded with a low digital hum. I navigated directly to the archives, selecting the timestamp for late afternoon—precisely the hour I had pulled up the gravel driveway. The timeline bar appeared at the bottom of the screen, marked with green intervals indicating continuous recording. My heart hammered against my ribs as I clicked on the foyer camera feed, expecting to see the crystal-clear truth of Elena standing over our vulnerable child while Maria pleaded for mercy.
Instead, the screen flickered, stuttered, and displayed a static-filled gray box with a stark, red system error message: Archive feed corrupted. Sector 4 maintenance override active.
I frowned, leaning closer to the monitor. I clicked backward through the hours, checking the morning logs, the afternoon feeds, the overnight archives. Every single file encompassing the nursery corridor and the main foyer between the hours of noon and six o'clock had been systematically wiped clean. Not just deleted—overwritten with null data packets to prevent recovery by standard forensic tools.
A cold dread settled deep in my stomach. Elena hadn't been bluffing when she mentioned the maintenance override. Someone with root-level administrator privileges—someone who knew the proprietary master codes—had accessed the local server room directly from the house console and scrubbed the evidence clean before I ever stepped foot through the front door.
I leaned back in my chair, rubbing my tired eyes with the heels of my hands. My gold wristwatch slid down my wrist, the metal cold against my skin. The realization dawned on me with brutal clarity: this wasn't an isolated lapse in judgment or a momentary loss of temper. It was premeditated. Elena had anticipated that I might check the cameras, and she had prepared her defense long before I ever reached the house. She had insulated herself behind a wall of technological security and social privilege, believing herself completely untouchable.
I reached for my desk phone and punched an internal extension. It rang twice before a hesitant voice answered.
"Maria? Are you still awake?" I asked, keeping my voice hushed.
"Yes, Mr. Arthur. I'm in the staff quarters," she replied instantly.
"Listen to me carefully. Do you know who has the physical keys to the basement server room besides myself?"

There was a brief, heavy silence on the line. When Maria spoke again, her voice trembled slightly. "Only Mrs. Elena, sir. She had a duplicate made last month under the guise of upgrading the smart-home lighting system."
I closed my eyes, letting out a slow, controlled breath. The puzzle pieces were falling into place, revealing a chilling portrait of deception right inside my own home. I thanked Maria, hung up the phone, and turned off the desk lamp. The battle lines were drawn, and the war for my son's safety had only just begun.
