Chapter 7: The Ledger of Sins

The morning sun cut through the heavy gray clouds, casting long, sharp lines across the polished oak table in the executive boardroom on the forty-second floor. Twelve members of the Sterling Foundation board sat in heavy leather chairs, murmuring among themselves as they stared at the printed financial audits laid out before them. At the head of the table, Vincent stood tall in a charcoal-gray suit, his expression carved from granite.

"These disbursements," Vincent said, his voice carrying clearly across the silent room, "show a clear pattern of embezzlement and deliberate sabotage dating back six years. The funds were funneled through shell companies controlled by Julianna Vance and her family's real estate holding firm."

Mr. Henderson, the eldest board member and a lifelong ally of the Sterling family, adjusted his glasses and looked up with a frown. "Vincent, these are grave accusations against one of our primary merger partners. Where is the verification for these wire logs? Who compiled this forensic accounting?"

Before Vincent could answer, the frosted glass doors at the back of the boardroom swung open. Eleanor walked in, her heels clicking sharply against the marble floor, followed closely by a court stenographer carrying a heavy leather briefcase. Eleanor did not look at the board members immediately; she walked straight to the head of the table and laid a certified copy of a birth certificate and a medical affidavit down in front of Mr. Henderson.

"The verification," Eleanor said, her voice ringing with absolute authority, "comes from the woman Julianna Vance tried to murder in the servants' quarters fire five years ago."

A collective gasp rippled through the room. Necks craned as all eyes turned toward the doorway where I stood, dressed in a simple, tailored navy-blue dress that Eleanor had insisted I wear instead of the maid's uniform. I kept my chin up, remembering every sleepless night in the cramped apartment, every dollar saved for medicine, and the small face of my son waiting safely across town.

"Lucia Sterling," Eleanor continued, placing a hand gently on my forearm. "My legal daughter-in-law, and the mother of the true heir to the Sterling estate. The woman you all assumed was just another transient domestic worker."

Mr. Henderson stared down at the official documents, his face pale as he cross-referenced the corporate signature stamps with the state marriage registry seals. "Good God," he whispered. "The insurance payout for the fire... it was all a manufactured crisis to clear the line of succession."

Vincent didn't waste a second. He stepped forward, laying a second folder down containing the text messages intercepted by the federal marshals the previous night. "Julianna is currently being held at the federal detention center in Brooklyn without bail. Her father’s firm has already withdrawn their representation. We are voting today to strip the Vance family of every voting share they hold in this foundation."

The silence in the room was absolute, broken only by the rhythmic ticking of the antique grandfather clock in the corner. One by one, the board members reached for their pens.
