Chapter 15: A New Dawn

The modest suburban house sat quietly on a tree-lined street miles away from the glittering skyscrapers of the financial district. The front lawn was neatly kept, dotted with a child's plastic red tricycle and a few scattered autumn leaves. As Vincent’s town car pulled up to the curb, my heart hammered against my ribs—not with fear, but with a deep, overwhelming wave of joy.
Before Vincent could reach for the door handle, I pushed it open and stepped out onto the sidewalk, my boots clicking softly against the concrete. The front door of the house swung open, and Mrs. Gable, the kind retired nurse who had looked after Leo while I worked in the shadows, stepped out onto the porch with a broad, welcoming smile.
And then, darting past her legs, came a blur of blue denim and sneakers.
"Mom!"
Leo cried out, his small legs pumping as he raced down the front steps and across the grass straight toward me. I dropped to my knees just as he collided into my arms, wrapping his small, sturdy frame tightly around my neck. I buried my face in his soft brown hair, tears finally spilling over my eyelashes, warm and unburdened.
"I missed you so much, sweet boy," I whispered, holding him as if letting go would make him vanish like smoke.
"Mr. Vincent said we're going to live in a big castle now," Leo said, pulling back to look at me with wide, innocent eyes before pointing over my shoulder.
I looked up to see Vincent walking across the lawn, his sharp suit jacket unbuttoned, a genuine, unguarded smile transforming his handsome face. He knelt down beside us, meeting Leo at eye level without a trace of his usual boardroom reserve.
"It's not a castle, buddy," Vincent said, gently ruffling Leo's hair. "It's a home. And we have a very big backyard for a dog, if your mom approves."
Leo’s eyes lit up like Christmas morning. He looked between Vincent and me, a gap-toothed grin spreading across his face. "Can we get a golden retriever?"
May you like
"We can get whatever dog you want," I laughed, wiping a stray tear from my cheek as I took Vincent’s outstretched hand.
Standing there in the warm afternoon sunlight, with my son safe in my arms and the man I loved standing beside me, the ghosts of the past finally faded into the distance. The glamour of the ballroom was gone, replaced by something infinitely more precious: a future built on truth, love, and a family unbroken.
