Chapter 12: Shattered Illusions

The ballroom was a sea of crystal chandeliers, expensive champagne, and glittering silk. At the center of the elevated dais stood Julianna Vance, her silver gown catching the light as she laughed brightly with three members of the foundation's executive board. She looked untouchable, the queen of high society ruling over a domain built on privilege and deception.
That illusion shattered the moment Vincent and I walked through the double doors.
The low murmur of conversation rippling through the room died down instantly. Heads turned. Whispers broke out like static electricity. Julianna’s smile faltered, her painted lips parting in silent shock as she recognized the woman standing beside Vincent—the maid she had humiliated weeks ago, now walking with her head held high.
"What is the meaning of this?" Julianna demanded, her voice cutting sharply across the silent room as she swept down the steps of the dais. She stopped a few feet away from us, her eyes narrowing with venom. "Vincent, why have you brought a disgraced employee back into the charity gala? Security should have removed her from the premises hours ago."
"Security is currently busy with your former legal counsel, Julianna," Vincent replied, his tone ice-cold. He stepped forward, shielding me slightly while holding the room's collective attention. "Mr. Miller is currently explaining to federal agents how you paid him to falsify the 2018 fire safety reports and orchestrate the sabotage of the East Wing."
The color drained entirely from Julianna’s face. She staggered back a half-step, her manicured fingers digging into the fabric of her skirt. "That's a lie. A ridiculous, slanderous lie fabricated by a bitter servant who couldn't handle her station."
"It's not a lie," Eleanor Sterling’s voice rang out clearly from the stairs. The matriarch walked forward, leaning on her cane, her silver-haired dignity commanding immediate respect. She stopped beside me, her old eyes shining with unshed tears as she looked at my face. "I listened to the federal recordings myself, Julianna. You stole my company, you tried to burn my family to the ground, and you thought you could bury the truth forever."

"Eleanor, you're losing your mind!" Julianna shrieked, panic finally cracking her pristine facade. "She's a nobody! A nameless girl!"
"She is Lucia Sterling," Eleanor corrected, her voice echoing off the marble walls with thunderous authority. "The rightful heir to everything you tried to steal."
