Chapter 1: The Crystal Ballroom

The chandeliers overhead hummed with a quiet, expensive brilliance, casting golden reflections across the polished marble floors of the estate. Down below, the annual charity gala was in full swing, a deafening symphony of clinking champagne flutes, polite laughter, and string quartet music that masked the rot underneath. I stood near the base of the white and gold classical columns, my fingernails digging into the fabric of my blue maid dress as I tried to blend into the neoclassical architecture. My dark hair was pulled back in a neat, tight bun that felt like a vise grip against my scalp, matching the tension coiling inside my chest. In my arms, four-year-old Leo buried his tear-streaked face into the crook of my neck, his little fists clutching the fabric of his mustard yellow long-sleeve shirt so hard my shoulder throbbed. He was trembling violently, overwhelmed by the shouting that had erupted just moments earlier near the grand staircase.

Across the wide expanse of the foyer, the glittering illusion shattered completely. Victoria stood in a stunning dark red strapless gown that hugged her frame like fresh blood, her heavy gold necklace and matching bracelet catching the harsh glare of the overhead lights as she pointed a manicured finger directly at us. Her face was contorted into an ugly mask of rage, completely belying the benevolent philanthropist the glossy magazines painted her to be. Beside her stood Victor, his sharp black suit and crisp white shirt looking suddenly too stiff, his expression frozen in a mixture of shock and profound cowardice. He didn't step forward to shield his son; he simply stared, his mouth slightly parted as Victoria's shrill voice cut through the polite murmurs of the surrounding socialites, silencing the room faster than a gunshot. The guests nearest us drifted back, forming a wide, suffocating circle of morbid curiosity.

"She did it! She did it!" Victoria shrieked again, her voice echoing off the marble pillars with a practiced theatricality that made my stomach turn. She took two sharp steps forward, her high heels clicking like a countdown clock against the stone floor. Every eye in the grand hall locked onto us, weighing the expensive silk of her gown against the humble cotton of my uniform, measuring her outrage against my silence. I tightened my grip on Leo, feeling the frantic beat of his little heart against my ribs. The urge to bolt was overwhelming, but my feet felt leaden, glued to the polished floor by years of quiet servitude and fear. Yet, beneath the terror, something cold and sharp began to harden in my chest. I lowered my chin, meeting Victoria's furious glare with a dead, unflinching stare that made her stumble half a step backward in sudden, uncalculated confusion.

"Stay away from the boy!" I said, my voice dropping an octave, carrying a quiet, lethal firmness that caused the nearest guests to gasp audibly. I didn't yell or break down; the sheer restraint in my tone acted like a splash of cold water in the heated room. Victoria's mouth dropped open, her polished facade cracking at the edges as she realized the usual terror tactics weren't working on the hired help tonight. She glanced frantically around the room, noticing the way the whispers had shifted from sympathetic murmurs to suspicious scrutiny directed entirely at her. Victor finally stirred, taking a tentative half-step toward us, his hand twitching at his side as if reaching for a lifeline that didn't exist. But I didn't wait for him to find his voice or his courage. With my free hand, I slowly retrieved the smartphone from the deep pocket of my white apron, its screen glowing brightly against the dark fabric.

The device was already unlocked, displaying an active call timer that had ticked past fourteen minutes, accompanied by the hypnotic, dancing peaks of an audio wave interface recording every single word spoken in this opulent cage. Victor's eyes caught the glowing screen, widening in sudden, absolute terror as the realization of what I possessed slammed into him like a physical blow. The color drained entirely from his face, leaving him looking ghost-white beneath the warm chandelier light. Victoria stopped dead in her tracks, her outstretched finger trembling as she finally noticed the recording indicator blinking steadily in the upper corner of the display. Without breaking eye contact with the man who had traded his own flesh and blood for social standing, I pressed my thumb against the glass, letting the heavy, damning audio playback bleed out into the stunned silence of the grand ballroom.
