Chapter 14: The Federal Conference Room

The heavy mahogany door of the federal conference room clicked shut, sealing out the chaotic noise of the reporters and protesters lingering in the hallway below. Inside, the room was quiet and sterile, illuminated by the harsh overhead fluorescent panels reflecting off a polished oak table. Two federal investigators in conservative suits sat at the far end, their expressions unreadable as they adjusted a sleek digital audio receiver on the center of the desk. Victor sat across from them, his head bowed, his hands clasped tightly together as if trying to hold himself from breaking apart completely. Sarah stood directly behind my chair, while David leaned against the far wall with his arms folded.

"Let's play the unedited file," one of the investigators instructed, nodding toward the device connected to the encrypted drive we had surrendered.

I reached out, my fingers steady as I tapped the screen of the key object—the exact smartphone that had recorded the conversation months ago in the mansion's dark hallway. The audio interface loaded instantly, displaying the familiar green soundwave pulsing across the display. I pressed play, and the tin metadata-verified audio filled the silent room with chilling clarity.

“Victor’s child must disappear...” Victoria’s cold, calculating voice echoed off the wood-paneled walls, followed by Marcus Vance’s smooth, dismissive reply plotting the entire operation behind closed doors.

Victor physically flinched as the playback continued, his hands flying up to cover his face as a ragged sob broke from his chest. The illusion of his perfect family, his powerful dynasty, and his innocent ignorance evaporated in an instant. He had suspected things were wrong, had chosen comfort over inquiry, and his cowardice had almost cost an innocent child his life. He dropped his hands, his eyes red-rimmed and filled with a desperate, crushing remorse as he looked up at me. "I didn't know the extent of it... God help me, I didn't know they went that far," Victor choked out, his voice cracking with undeniable grief.

"Your ignorance was their shield, Mr. Vance," Sarah stated coldly, sliding a stack of federal arrest warrants across the table toward the investigators. "And now, that shield is shattered." The lead investigator picked up the documents, glancing at the signatures before nodding solemnly to his partner. Phones were lifted, orders were barked, and within minutes, federal marshals were dispatched to bring Victoria Vance in for formal questioning and indictment.
