Chapter 7: Dawn in the Conservatory

The pale gray light of dawn filtered through the tall arched glass panes of the conservatory, casting long, geometric shadows across the white marble floor. I sat on a wrought-iron bench surrounded by rows of dormant orchids and tall ferns, clutching a porcelain mug of black coffee that had long since gone cold. The house was utterly silent, save for the rhythmic drip of rainwater hitting the greenhouse roof from the terrace above.

Footsteps approached softly down the flagged corridor—light, measured steps that didn't belong to Julian. I looked up to see Maya standing at the glass double doors, her beige niqab securely fastened over her face, leaving only her dark, intense eyes visible. She pushed the door open a fraction and slipped inside, closing it silently behind her before walking over to stand before me.

"You shouldn't be down here so early, Madam," Maya said, her voice muffled slightly by the fabric, yet carrying a steady, unyielding calm.

"I couldn't sleep," I said, setting the cold coffee mug down on a small mosaic table. I reached into my pocket and withdrew the flash drive I had taken from Julian’s desk, holding it out flat on my palm. "I went into his study last night. I found the ledger. I found your name, Maya."

Maya looked down at the small black rectangle resting on my hand. Her shoulders stiffened under the simple gray maid's uniform, and for a long moment, the only sound was the steady patter of rain against the glass overhead. When she finally raised her gaze, her eyes held a fierce, burning intelligence that pierced right through the humble disguise.

"He thinks he buried those files deep enough," Maya whispered, taking a cautious step closer. "He thinks that because he bought the clinic silence and paid off the local inspectors, the ghosts of his chemical plant will just fade away."

"They won't fade away," I said, my voice dropping to a harsh whisper. "Not while he uses this foundation as a shield to hide the money he stole from the families he poisoned. I have the backups here. Every shell corporation, every payout, every forged signature."

Maya looked at me, a profound shift occurring in her posture. The submissive posture of the household maid vanished, replaced by the fierce dignity of a survivor. "Having the files is only the first step, Eleanor. Julian has the police chief on retainer and half the district judges sitting on his charity boards. If you hand those files to the authorities tomorrow, they will vanish before they ever reach a courtroom."

"Then we don't give them to the local authorities," I replied, my fingers curling tightly around the flash drive. "We take them straight to the federal investigators in the city. But I need your help to get out of this house without him knowing."
