Chapter 13: The Grand Ballroom

The Crystal Palace ballroom glittered under the brilliant glow of three thousand hand-cut chandeliers, reflecting off polished marble floors and expensive silk gowns. String quartets played softly from the mezzanine balcony, while waiters in pristine white tuxedos circulated through the crowd with champagne flutes on silver trays. Flashbulbs popped incessantly near the grand staircase as local celebrities and political figures posed for the morning society columns.
I stood near the edge of the dais in my dark blue satin off-shoulder dress, the diamond necklace resting heavily against my collarbone. Every breath I took was slow and measured, keeping the physical tension hidden beneath an exterior of effortless elegance. Across the room, Julian was holding court near the center bar, laughing smoothly with the state senator and two prominent real estate developers. He raised his glass in a silent toast, his handsome face framed by the warm ambient lighting, looking every bit the untouchable pillar of community success.
A sharp buzz vibrated against my wrist from the small burner phone hidden inside my evening bag. I stepped back toward the velvet-draped pillars near the service doors, pulling the phone out just far enough to read the text message from Detective Miller: Warrants signed. DA moving in ten minutes. Stay clear of the main stage.
My heart hammered against my ribs, but my face remained completely still. I slipped the phone back into my bag and looked up to see Julian excusing himself from the senator, his dark eyes locking onto mine across the crowded floor. He began walking toward me with that slow, confident stride, a thin smile touching his lips.
"Eleanor," Julian said as he reached me, his voice dropping into a smooth, commanding register. "You look radiant tonight. The press has already taken a dozen photos of you near the entryway. But why are you standing back here in the shadows?"
"I needed a moment of quiet," I replied evenly, my voice devoid of its usual submissive warmth. "It’s very loud out there."
Julian’s smile faltered for a fraction of a second, his eyes narrowing as he detected the shift in my tone. Before he could speak, the murmurs near the entrance began to rise, rippling through the crowd like static electricity. Heavy footsteps echoed across the marble foyer, and a group of state troopers accompanied by two plainclothes investigators in federal windbreakers marched purposefully into the ballroom.

The string quartet drifted off into awkward silence. Heads turned in unison as Detective Miller walked straight toward the dais, holding a crisp white document in his hand.
Julian stiffened beside me, his jaw tightening into a hard line. "What is the meaning of this interruption?" he demanded, stepping forward to block Miller's path, his public charm instantly replaced by cold authority. "This is a private charity gala for the Vance Foundation. You have no jurisdiction here without prior clearance."
