Chapter 3: The Conservatory Pact

The morning sun filtered through the massive glass panels of the conservatory, casting pale, geometric shadows across the terracotta floor and the sprawling rows of exotic orchids. The air was thick with the scent of damp earth and blooming jasmine—a quiet sanctuary far removed from the cold formality of the dining room. I wrapped my cashmere cardigan tighter around my shoulders, my boots clicking softly against the stone tiles as I approached the far corner where a figure in a beige niqab and white apron was tending to the delicate roots of a white Phalaenopsis.
Maya didn't turn as I approached, but her gloved hands paused over the ceramic pot, the silence between us charged with a sudden, electric tension. I stopped two paces away, keeping my voice low and steady against the soft patter of the conservatory's automatic misting system.
“You left something in my room,” I said softly, watching the fabric of her head covering for any sign of a reaction.
Maya slowly stood up, turning to face me. For a long moment, neither of us spoke. Then, with deliberate, unhurried movements, she reached up and unpinned the heavy beige fabric from around her face, letting the cloth drop away to reveal her features in the harsh morning light. I caught my breath. Across her left cheek and jawline ran an unmistakable, jagged chemical burn—tissue puckered and discolored, telling the silent story of a laboratory accident that had been conveniently erased from official corporate records three years ago.
“Julian called it a routine mishap,” Maya said, her voice raspy, carrying a quiet, unwavering strength that defied her submissive uniform. “Insurance payout signed away my silence. But when I saw him destroying other families the same way he destroyed mine, I couldn't keep scrubbing the floors and pretending.”
I looked at the scar, seeing the undeniable reflection of Julian’s cruelty stripped of all its billionaire glamour. The distance between us—mistress and maid—evaporated in the humid warmth of the glasshouse. I stepped closer, my fingers gently brushing the edge of her white apron in a silent gesture of solidarity.

“He thinks he’s untouchable,” I whispered, my voice hardening with resolve. “Help me find the ledgers in his study, and we will show the world what the foundation is really hiding.”
Maya’s dark eyes locked onto mine, a fierce, mutual understanding passing between us. We weren't just two women sharing a house anymore; we were co-conspirators in a reckoning long overdue.
