Chapter 5: Meeting In The Shadows

The air inside the sub-wall utility corridor was thick and heavy, entirely devoid of the conditioned breeze that kept the rest of the mansion so artificially crisp. I crept forward on my hands and knees, my knees scraping against the rough concrete floor. The only illumination came from stray beams of light bleeding through the gaps in the old ventilation slats ahead. My palms were slick with sweat as I gripped the half-eaten piece of bread I had managed to salvage from the breakfast table before Clara locked the kitchen down. The scraping sound grew louder, resolving into the labored, uneven breathing of a small child. I rounded a wooden pillar and froze. Sitting huddled against the cold foundation wall, her knees pulled tight to her chest in a faded cotton dress that was far too small for her, was Lily.

She looked up, her wide, hollow eyes blinking against the dim light. Her skin had an unhealthy, translucent pallor, and her dark hair was matted and tangled around her thin shoulders. For a terrifying second, I thought she might scream or pull away, but as she looked at my face—seeing the same dark hair and familiar features that echoed Richard's—a strange, knowing calm settled over her gaunt features. She didn't look like a monster or a ghost; she looked like a little girl who had spent years listening to a world that had abandoned her. I crawled closer, keeping my movements slow and deliberate, and held out the piece of bread. Her trembling hand reached out from the shadows, her small fingers brushing against mine with ice-cold skin.

May you like

"I brought this for you," I whispered, my voice cracking with emotion as I handed her the bread. She took it ravenously, biting into it with a desperate, quiet hunger that tore right through my chest. Beside her on the dirt floor sat a plastic cup filled with murky water collected from a leaking condensation pipe. I swallowed hard, the weight of the injustice pressing down on me with suffocating force. "My dad... Richard... he's putting steel plates over all the vents upstairs. They're trying to lock you in forever." Lily stopped chewing for a split second, her eyes darkening with a profound, terrifying sorrow that belonged to someone ten times her age. She swallowed the bread slowly, her voice coming out as a dry, rasping whisper that sent shivers down my spine. "He doesn't want anyone to see what he left behind before he became rich."

Before I could ask her what she meant, a sharp, heavy thud echoed from the outer kitchen wall. The sound of electric drill motors whined to life just beyond the drywall. The contractors had started installing the steel plates. Lily flinched, pulling herself back against the concrete foundation with a soft gasp of fear. "Ethan," she whispered urgently, her small hand reaching out to grab the hem of my striped shirt. "You have to go. If they catch you here, they'll lock you up with me." My heart hammered against my ribs like a trapped bird. I squeezed her icy fingers tightly, making a silent vow in the dark. "I'll find a way to get you out," I promised, my voice fierce and steady. I scrambled backward through the dust, diving back through the hidden latch just as heavy footsteps shook the floorboards of the pantry above.
