Chapter 12: The Kitchen Reckoning

We moved through the shadows of the utility corridor like ghosts, Lily’s bare feet making almost no sound against the concrete floor. Every creak of the floorboards overhead sounded like a gunshot in the confined space, reminding us that a hundred guests were drinking champagne just feet away. When we reached the secondary service door that opened directly behind the pantry, I paused, listening intently to the muffled hum of conversation and the steady clatter of catering staff moving through the scullery. I eased the latch forward, praying the oil I had applied to the hinges earlier that afternoon would prevent any squeaking. The door cracked open, spilling warm, bright kitchen light across the dark floorboards and making Lily squint hard against the sudden glare.

"Stay right here behind the shelving unit," I whispered, guiding her small frame into the dim corner between the industrial flour bins and the canned goods. "I'm going to check the main floor."

Before I could slip back out into the open kitchen, the pantry door swung wide open with a sharp click. Clara froze on the threshold, a silver tray laden with fresh champagne flutes balanced in one hand, her emerald gown catching the under-cabinet lighting. For three agonizing seconds, the entire room seemed to stop spinning. Clara’s eyes dropped from my face down to the ragged, wide-eyed girl huddled in the dark corner behind me. The silver tray slipped from her fingers, clattering loudly against the tile floor; champagne flutes shattered into a thousand glittering shards, spraying liquid and glass across our shoes. Clara didn't scream. Instead, she staggered backward against the stainless steel prep counter, her hands flying to her mouth as all the color drained completely from her face, leaving her looking hollowed out and ghostly.

"Clara? What in God's name was that—" Richard’s voice cut through the pantry doorway as he strode in from the scullery, his irritation instantly vanishing the moment his gaze locked onto the scene before him. He stopped dead in his tracks, his tall frame stiffening inside his custom-tailored suit. His eyes darted from Clara’s trembling form to me, and finally down to Lily, who was clutching my sleeve with a white-knuckled grip. The arrogant, untouchable corporate mask that Richard wore like armor for the public cracked down the middle, revealing a flash of sheer, panicked primal realization. "Get out," Richard breathed, his voice dropping into a harsh, dangerous register as he took a slow step forward, his hands clenching into fists at his sides. "Get her back into that wall right now, Ethan, or you have no idea what I'll do."

"No," I heard myself say, the word stepping out of my mouth with a clarity and strength I didn't know I possessed. I stepped in front of Lily, shielding her with my own body, staring straight into the cold, familiar eyes of the man who called himself my father. "It's over, Richard. Everyone's going to know."
