Chapter 10: The Master Blueprints

By midnight, the mansion was dead silent, save for the rhythmic dripping of rainwater from the overflowing gutters outside. The contractors had gone, leaving behind a scarred, industrial-looking kitchen where pristine white baseboards had been brutally replaced with raw, gray steel plates bolted down with heavy hex-head screws. But they had missed one thing. While Richard and Clara were locked in a screaming match in the master suite upstairs, I had slipped down the back service stairs to Richard's private study. The room smelled of old leather, expensive cologne, and high-stakes corporate anxiety.

The mahogany desk was locked, but Richard had left his heavy brass key ring resting right beside the leather blotter when he rushed out of the room earlier that evening. My hands shook as I picked up the brass ring, sorting through the jagged keys until I found the small, serrated one marked with a red dot. I slid it into the lower side drawer of the desk, turning it with a soft click. Inside, beneath stacks of offshore bank statements and property deeds, lay a thick, rolled-up set of architectural blueprints titled Phase II Sub-Wall Utility Expansion — Confidential. I unrolled the stiff paper across the mahogany surface, shielding my pocket flashlight with my palm so the beam wouldn't spill out under the study door.

The blueprint layout revealed a terrifying architectural reality. Behind the pantry and the master walk-in closet lay an unmapped thirty-foot utility corridor—a forgotten void left over from the original 1920s farmhouse structure that the modern mansion had been built directly over. A secondary hatch, controlled not from the kitchen but from the master study itself, was marked with a handwritten red pen note in Richard's own sharp handwriting: Sealed permanently per legal agreement — 04/14. My heart hammered against my ribs like a trapped bird. The steel plates in the kitchen were just a distraction; the real entrance, the heavy deadbolt that kept Lily locked in total darkness, was right here in this room, sitting less than ten feet away from where Richard slept.

I carefully rolled the blueprints back up, slipping them down the inside of my sweatshirt, and locked the desk drawer back up. As I slipped out into the darkened hallway, the cold metal of the rolled paper pressed against my chest like a shield. I had the layout. I had the truth. Now, all I needed was the courage to turn the key before Richard and Clara realized the walls were closing in on them, too.
