Chapter 8: The Counter-Notice

The morning light cut sharply through the blinds of my downtown office, casting long horizontal shadows across the mahogany desk where Marcus and I were reviewing the final deposition packets. The silence of the room was broken only by the sharp chime of my phone signaling an incoming priority alert from our legal filings clerk downstairs.

Marcus glanced up from a stack of financial audit summaries, his expression tightening. "Arthur, you need to see this. A courier just dropped off a hand-delivered emergency motion from Elena's defense team."

I walked over to the desk and picked up the heavy cream-colored envelope bearing the seal of the family court district. Inside was a sweeping counter-notice demanding immediate dismissal of our emergency injunction, accompanied by an affidavit signed by Elena claiming that the wire transfers were authorized family investments and that Maria’s testimony was the result of coercion by an unstable household employer.

"She's playing hardball," Marcus noted, tapping a finger against the paper. "She knows the audit is bulletproof, so she’s trying to shift the narrative into a bitter custody dispute. She wants to paint you as the aggressive, controlling partner and use public sympathy to pressure the family court judge."

"She can file all the fabricated affidavits she wants," I replied, my voice cold and steady as I tossed the papers back onto the desk. "The wire transfers don't lie, and neither do the IP addresses originating from her private dressing suite where the fraudulent authorizations were executed. We don't need a public spectacle; we need a clean, surgical legal presentation."

"Agreed," Marcus said, pulling his laptop closer. "I’ve already contacted the presiding magistrate's clerk to ensure our forensic accountant is scheduled for the first hour of Monday's session. We'll enter the nursery floorboard cache directly into evidence under seal to protect the boy's privacy."

I looked out the window toward the skyline, watching the steady stream of traffic moving along the highway below. Elena’s entire strategy depended on bluffing her way through the cracks in the legal system, relying on the social clout she had spent years cultivating. But clout didn't override hard financial tracking and physical evidence. The walls were closing in, and no amount of fabricated narrative could rewrite the digital trail she had left behind.
