Chapter 6: The Charity Gala Crackdown

The Grand Ballroom of the Metro Arts Center hummed with the suffocating warmth of wealth, expensive perfume, and hollow applause. Crystal chandeliers cast prismatic reflections across marble pillars and floor-to-ceiling windows, while tuxedo-clad guests and women in designer evening gowns circulated among tables laden with silver and champagne. At the center of the dais stood Elena, radiant in a custom silver-sewn gown, her public smile polished to a blinding sheen as she accepted a plaque for her philanthropic contributions to the city's youth initiative.
I stood near the shadowed perimeter of the hall, half-hidden by a heavy velvet drape, watching the polished performance unfold. Marcus stood beside me, holding a leather-bound folio containing the newly stamped court orders and forensic audit summaries.
"She’s playing her role well," Marcus murmured, watching Elena adjust the microphone to deliver her acceptance speech. "Looking every bit the grieving, dedicated patron of the arts."
"Watch what happens when she tries to step down from that stage," I replied quietly, my gaze locked on her face.
Elena finished her speech to thunderous applause, bowing gracefully before turning to step off the dais. As she walked toward the VIP lounge where local journalists and board directors were waiting to congratulate her, two uniformed court bailiffs stepped out from behind a marble pillar, blocking her path with quiet, absolute authority.
The murmur of conversation around us stuttered and died out like a snuffed candle. Heads turned. Elena froze mid-step, her elegant posture rigid, the glittering smile fracturing across her face as she recognized the official seals on the documents Marcus held out as he stepped into the light.
"Mrs. Elena Vance," Marcus said evenly, his voice carrying clearly across the silent ballroom. "You are hereby served with an emergency injunction for trust fund embezzlement, a temporary restraining order barring you from the Vance family estate, and a mandatory appearance notice for family court on Monday morning."
Elena’s face drained of color, the high-society glamour melting away in an instant to reveal the cold, desperate panic underneath. She reached out to swat the papers away, her hand trembling violently, but the bailiffs stepped closer, taking her by the elbow with practiced professionalism.
"You can't do this," Elena hissed, her voice sharp and brittle, cutting through the heavy silence of the room as flashbulbs from a startled society photographer suddenly began to pop in the shadows. "This is a setup! Arthur, you coward!"

I stepped out from the shadow of the drape, walking slowly across the polished marble floor until I stood directly in front of her. The contrast between our public elegance and the raw, ugly truth of what she had done hung heavily in the air between us.
"Not anymore," I said coldly, looking down at the woman who had tried to steal our son's future. "Watch me."
