Chapter 7: Downstairs Whispers

The door to the basement staff quarters clicked shut, cutting off the muffled strains of string quartet music drifting down from the main floor. I sank onto the narrow iron-framed bed, my hands trembling as the adrenaline finally drained from my system. The room was cold, lit only by a single yellow bulb swinging from a frayed cord, but compared to the blinding scrutiny of the ballroom, it felt like a sanctuary.

A sharp rap sounded against the heavy oak door before it pushed open. Mrs. Gable, the head housekeeper, stepped inside, her face set in lines of severe disapproval. For a terrifying second, I thought she had come to finish what Julianne had started, to pack my meager belongings and throw me out into the London rain.

Instead, the older woman closed the door carefully behind her, checking the hallway before turning the iron key in the lock. She reached into the pocket of her sensible grey skirt and pulled out a folded manila envelope, placing it squarely on the small wooden table beside my cot.

“You played a dangerous game tonight, girl,” Mrs. Gable said, her voice dropping to a gravelly whisper. “Mr. Mercer doesn't usually step in to clean up messes like that. Not for kitchen help. Not for maids.”

“I didn't ask him to,” I whispered back, my throat tight. “Julianne framed me. You saw the pocket—she slipped it in while I was carrying the tray.”

“I’ve seen Mrs. Vance frame three girls in the last five years,” Mrs. Gable replied grimly, tapping the manila envelope. “And I’ve watched three girls pack their bags and disappear before dawn with a severance check and a signed non-disclosure agreement. But none of them had Mr. Mercer looking at them the way he looked at you when he walked through those doors.”

I looked down at the envelope. “What is this?”

“Service records,” she said quietly. “Not the ones in the main filing cabinet upstairs. The ones the old master kept before he passed. If you're going to fight her, you need to know what happened to the girl who had this room before you.”
