Chapter 13: The Ledger Opened

The silence in the boardroom was absolute. You could have heard a pin drop on the thick wool carpet, or the rhythmic ticking of the antique mahogany clock by the window. Julianne’s manicured hand hovered in the air for a fraction of a second after Dominic removed it from his arm, her fingers curling into a tight fist as realization slowly dawned behind her wide, startled eyes. The trustees leaned forward as one, their expensive leather chairs creaking in unison.
Dominic didn’t look at Julianne. He rested his knuckles on the edge of the polished conference table, his gaze sweeping slowly over the faces of the senior board members. His dark suit was immaculate, the fabric catching the pale afternoon light filtering through the leaded glass windows.
"Before anyone votes on a termination contract or calls local authorities," Dominic’s voice cut through the heavy air, low and steady, carrying an absolute authority that brooked no argument, "we need to review the actual administrative history of this estate. Let’s look at what has truly been happening under our roof."
He opened the thick leather register. The yellowed pages crackled faintly in the quiet room. Lady Abernathy adjusted her spectacles, her lips pursed in deep disapproval. "Dominic, darling, this is entirely irregular. We are here to address a theft—"
"This is the ledger of employment and severance protocols maintained by my late uncle," Dominic interrupted, his tone chillingly polite. He turned the heavy volume so the open pages faced the trustees. "Notice the signatures. Notice the recurring clauses of sudden, unexplained departure accompanied by substantial offshore settlements. All authorized under a secondary administrative seal."
I stood silently near the doorway, my hands still folded over my black and white apron, my heart hammering against my ribs. I watched Julianne’s face drain of color. The carefully constructed mask of the innocent, wronged fiancée was cracking, revealing the desperate panic underneath. She took a sharp, audible breath, stepping toward the table.
"He's lying," Julianne hissed, her voice losing its polished social-register lilt, revealing a harsh, desperate edge. "He's manipulating records to protect a common maid who has clearly stolen from me. Look at her! She doesn't even belong in this room."
Dominic turned his head slowly, fixing her with a cold, level stare that made her flinch. "She belongs here much more than you realize, Julianne. Because unlike you, she didn't try to bury the truth in offshore accounts. She simply refused to let another person vanish."

He slid the manila folder across the mahogany surface toward the lead trustee, Mr. Vance. "Review the wire transfers from the past three years. Every single one matches a forced resignation from a domestic staff member who discovered unauthorized asset transfers from the estate accounts. Transfers managed directly by Julianne’s personal holding company."
Mr. Vance opened the folder with trembling fingers, his eyes scanning the banking statements. The color vanished from his cheeks as the implications settled over him like a physical weight. The room hummed with a sudden, suffocating tension.
