Chapter 14: The Final Reckoning

The trustees didn't speak for a long, agonizing minute. The rustle of paper was the only sound in the grand boardroom as Mr. Vance passed the financial statements down the line. Every pair of eyes in the room slowly shifted from the documents to Julianne, who stood frozen by the window, her breath coming in shallow, ragged gasps. Her carefully pinned blonde hair had come loose at the temple, a single strand clinging to her damp skin.

"Julianne," Mr. Vance finally said, his voice grave and laden with profound disappointment. "Is there any explanation for these corporate signatures? These are estate funds routed directly through your private registry in the Caymans."

Julianne’s eyes darted toward the double doors, as if calculating her chances of running. But two private security guards stood silently outside the frosted glass panes, their dark suits and immovable stances blocking any escape. She spun back around, her expression hardening into bitter defiance.

"You fools," she laughed, a sharp, unhinged sound that echoed off the high ceiling. "You absolute fools. Do you really think an estate like this runs on charity and clean hands? Dominic has known about the reallocations for months. He uses them. He just needed someone to pin the ultimate liability on when the audit hit."

She pointed a shaking finger directly at me. "And it was supposed to be her. That's why she was tied to the chandelier. To break her spirit, to make her take the fall when the books finally opened."

All eyes snapped back to Dominic. I held my breath, a cold knot tightening in my stomach. The memory of the thick rope biting into my wrists, the silver crystal overhead, and the terrifying weight of that night rushed back. I looked up at Dominic, waiting for the defense I knew he had to make.

Dominic slowly straightened to his full height. He looked at Julianne not with anger, but with a chilling, clinical detachment.

"You misunderstand, Julianne," Dominic said quietly, taking a step toward her. "I knew you were embezzling. I watched you lay your traps, and I let you believe you were clever enough to secure your future. But I never touched the staff. I never sanctioned cruelty under my roof. And I certainly never intended for an innocent woman to pay for your greed."

He reached into his inner suit jacket and pulled out a small, metallic flash drive, placing it gently beside the ledger. "This contains the digital surveillance footage from the foyer on the night you bound Clara to the chandelier. It also contains your voice authorizing the wire transfers. The authorities were notified ten minutes before this meeting began."

Julianne stared at the flash drive as if it were a venomous snake. Her knees buckled slightly, and she caught herself against the edge of a mahogany chair. The illusion of her untouchable high-society glamour had completely shattered.
