Chapter 2: The Secure Wing

The private east wing was a fortress within the mansion, shielded by heavy oak doors and independent security controls that few people besides Marcus and the patriarch ever accessed. Once inside, Marcus set me down gently on the velvet settee in the sitting room, immediately kneeling to check my ankles and knees for any signs of trauma from the abrupt catch. His movements were clinical yet extraordinarily tender, a strange juxtaposition to the intimidating, sharp-suited enforcer who patrolled the estate's public galleries. I pulled my white pajama set tighter around my shivering shoulders, staring blankly at the ornate Persian rug beneath my bare feet. The adrenaline was beginning to ebb, leaving behind a profound exhaustion that dragged at my limbs like lead weights. My hand rested instinctively on my abdomen, whispering silent reassurances to the life growing inside me, praying that the violent jolt had not done lasting harm.

Marcus rose to his feet, walking over to the heavy mahogany desk where a secure terminal blinked with green diagnostic lights. He tapped a sequence into the console, bringing up a multi-angle feed from the security cameras positioned throughout the grand hall and the upper balcony. I watched the screen from the settee, my heart stuttering as the playback loaded. There it was, captured in crisp, high-definition digital clarity: Victoria in her striking red blouse and black pants, stepping purposefully toward me as I stood near the railing. The malice on her face was unmistakable, frozen in a cruel smirk as her hands shot forward. Then came the blur of my fall, followed instantly by Marcus sprinting from the lower corridor with astonishing athleticism, catching me mid-air mere feet above the marble floor. Seeing it replayed made the danger terrifyingly real, stripping away any lingering doubt that it could have been a clumsy accident.

“She planned this,” I said, my voice barely audible over the hum of the server tower in the corner. “She knew I’d be by the balcony at that exact hour. I take my walk there every morning after the staff finishes dusting.”

“Victoria is ambitious, and she knows the trust fund is being restructured,” Marcus replied without turning away from the screen, his fingers flying across the keyboard to export the footage to an encrypted drive. “With you carrying the primary heir, her position in the household—and her access to the estate's liquidity—evaporates. She’s desperate, and desperation makes people sloppy.” He paused, turning to face me with a look of intense, unwavering focus. “You cannot stay in the main house after tonight, Clara. Even if we lock these doors, the psychological game she’s playing will take a toll you don't need right now.”

“Where would I go?” I asked, bitterness coloring my tone. “The entire family thinks I’m an outsider who married beneath their standards. If I leave, they’ll call it abandonment; if I stay, she’ll find another way to finish what she started.”

“You stay right here under my direct supervision,” Marcus corrected softly, stepping closer to the settee. “I’ve locked down the biometric access for this entire wing. No one enters without my authorization—not Victoria, not the maids, not even the board members. I will personally manage your meals, your medical checks, and your security.” I looked up into his fierce, protective eyes, seeing a dedication that went far beyond his job description as head of security. There was a personal vow in his gaze, an unspoken promise that no harm would ever reach me again while he drew breath. I nodded slowly, the tension in my shoulders easing by a fraction. For the first time since marrying into this wealthy, fractured family, I felt like I had an ally who possessed both the power and the will to stand against the storm.
