Chapter 13: The Grand Ballroom

The sheer weight of five hundred pairs of eyes turned toward the grand staircase as Marcus and I began our descent. Overhead, the vintage crystal chandelier caught the brilliant glare of the multi-tiered spotlights, refracting thousands of sharp, dazzling points of light across the white marble steps. Exactly three months ago, I had been pushed down these very stairs, gasping for air as I fell toward what was meant to be my death. Tonight, I walked down them with measured, deliberate steps, my hand resting securely on the sleeve of Marcus's black suit.
A sudden hush rippled through the sea of tuxedos and designer gowns assembled in the ballroom below. Whispers broke out among the socialites clustered near the fountain, their polished smiles faltering as they recognized the woman the tabloids had claimed was resting quietly in a private clinic upstate.
Victoria stood near the base of the staircase, her white Valentino gown sweeping across the marble floor like fresh snow. For a fraction of a second, her carefully sculpted mask slipped, her dark eyes widening in genuine horror as she looked up and saw me standing alive, breathing, and completely composed in a room she believed she had cleared of rivals.
"Ladies and gentlemen," Arthur’s voice boomed through the high-end sound system, rich and authoritative as he stepped up to the mahogany podium beneath the dais. "Thank you for gathering for this annual celebration of our family’s heritage. Before we proceed with the foundation's presidential transition, we have a brief, necessary announcement regarding the governance and financial integrity of our trust."
Victoria recovered her poise with terrifying speed, her face flushing with sharp anger as she swept forward toward the stairs, her heels clicking a staccato rhythm against the stone. "Arthur, this is completely out of order!" she called out, her voice carrying easily through the acoustic expanse of the hall. "The agenda for tonight's gala was approved weeks ago. We are here to celebrate charity, not to entertain the delusions of an unverified guest!"
Arthur did not even look down at her. He simply raised one hand toward the control booth at the rear of the ballroom. "Play the record, please."
The room plunged into sudden, total darkness as the chandeliers dimmed to a low amber glow. Instantly, the massive projection screens on either side of the stage flickered to life. High-definition security footage filled the towering displays—crystal-clear, unedited images of the eastern balcony. The camera captured Victoria’s malicious expression, the sudden, violent shove against my shoulders, and the horrifying second where I fell backward over the railing.
Gasps erupted from the front rows. Several prominent trustees stood up abruptly, their chairs scraping loudly against the marble floor.
Before the projection could switch to the second reel, Victoria lunged toward the stage steps, her voice rising to a shrill, desperate scream. "It's a fake! Deepfake technology! They're trying to steal the estate!"

Marcus didn't move an inch from where he stood beside me on the landing, but his mere physical presence blocked the bottom of the staircase like an iron gate. The screen flickered again, cutting from the silent footage of the push to the financial ledgers of Beacon Holdings—complete with Victoria's signature, her offshore routing numbers, and Julian Vance's signed confession displayed in crisp, legible black-and-white text across forty feet of screen.
The silence that followed was absolute. Every eye shifted from the glowing financial data back to Victoria, who stood frozen at the foot of the stairs, her white dress gleaming under the cold light of the screen, completely stripped of her power.
