Chapter 8: The Society Gala

By Saturday evening, the annual River Oaks Charity Ball was in full swing beneath the vaulted crystal chandeliers of the Austin Country Club. The ballroom was a glittering sea of black-tie elegance, champagne flutes, and polite society laughter. Elena stood beside me near the grand staircase, stunning in a backless emerald evening gown that caught every flash from the society photographers gathered near the entrance.

"Smile, darling," Elena whispered out of the side of her mouth, locking her arm tightly through mine as a local philanthropist approached to praise our recent architectural contributions to the city's children's hospital.

"I'm smiling," I replied evenly, my voice pitched just for her ears, though my eyes scanned the perimeter of the room.

Across the ballroom, standing near the mahogany bar with a crystal tumbler of scotch in his hand, was Marcus. He wore a tailored maroon velvet tuxedo jacket—a deliberate, arrogant nod to the shirt he had worn in my living room days earlier. He caught my eye across the crowded room, raised his glass in a silent, mocking toast, and began weaving his way through the tables toward us.

"Daniel, Elena," Marcus said smoothly as he reached our side, his voice dripping with oily charm. He extended a hand toward me. "Wonderful turnout tonight. I hear the firm's quarterly expansion numbers are looking remarkably robust."

Elena stiffened slightly beside me, her fingers tightening on my forearm. For a microsecond, panic flickered in her eyes before she smoothly recovered her poise.

I looked down at Marcus's outstretched hand, letting the silence stretch out just long enough to make the surrounding guests notice the odd tension. I didn't take his hand. Instead, I let a cold, calculated smile touch my lips, echoing the exact expression he had worn while plotting my ruin.

"The numbers are fascinating, Marcus," I said softly, my voice carrying an undercurrent of razor-sharp steel. "Some accounts are growing exponentially. Others are about to experience a catastrophic correction."

Marcus’s hand dropped slowly to his side, his smile faltering as our eyes locked in a silent contest of wills.
